Overtime Pay Calculator

Calculate your overtime rate and gross pay from your hourly rate, regular hours and overtime hours — with one or two overtime premiums.

Hours paid at the normal rate in the period (e.g. one week).

50% = time and a half (1.5×), 100% = double time (2×).

Optional, e.g. nights, Sundays or holidays.

The premiums come from your contract, collective agreement or local law — check what applies to you. The result is gross pay before tax and other deductions.

About this tool

Enter your hourly rate, your regular hours and your overtime hours with the overtime premium in percent (50% = time and a half). Add hours at a second rate, such as 100% (double time), if your contract has one. The calculator shows the overtime hourly rate, the overtime pay, the total gross pay and the average pay per hour, with the full calculation.

Frequently asked questions

Overtime rate = hourly rate × (1 + premium). At 25 per hour and a 50% premium the overtime rate is 37.50. Five overtime hours then pay 5 × 37.50 = 187.50 on top of the regular pay — 40 × 25 = 1,000 — for 1,187.50 in total.

Time and a half is 1.5 × the regular rate, a 50% premium. Double time is 2 × the rate, a 100% premium. In the US, the Fair Labor Standards Act requires at least time and a half for covered employees for hours over 40 in a workweek.

It depends on the country. The US requires at least 1.5 × the regular rate after 40 hours a week (FLSA). Norway requires at least 40% extra (Working Environment Act § 10-6). In the UK employers do not have to pay extra for overtime, but average pay across all hours must not fall below the National Minimum Wage.

Before tax. The calculator shows gross pay; income tax and other deductions are taken from overtime pay in the same way as from regular pay.
