About this tool

Percentages describe a part of a whole in hundredths, which makes them easy to compare across different totals. This calculator handles the three questions people ask most often: finding a percentage of a number, working out what percentage one number is of another, and measuring the increase or decrease between two values.

How to use it: pick the calculation mode that matches your question, enter the two numbers, and press Calculate. Only the fields relevant to your chosen mode are shown, and the result comes with a plain-language explanation and the formula that produced it.

The formulas behind each mode are simple. A percentage of a number is (percent ÷ 100) × value. To find what percent one number is of another, divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. Percentage change divides the difference between the new and original value by the original value, then multiplies by 100 — a positive result is an increase, a negative one a decrease.

Frequently asked questions

Divide the percentage by 100, then multiply by the number. For example, 20% of 150 is (20 ÷ 100) × 150 = 30. The calculator does this in the first mode and shows the formula alongside the result.

Divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. For example, 30 ÷ 150 × 100 = 20, so 30 is 20% of 150. Use the second mode for this.

Percentage change compares two values relative to the starting value — going from 100 to 125 is a 25% increase. Percentage points measure the plain difference between two percentages — going from 20% to 25% is a rise of 5 percentage points, but a 25% relative increase.

Yes. 150% of 40 is 60, and growing from 50 to 125 is a 150% increase. Percentages above 100 simply mean more than the whole or more than double the change.

Percentage change divides by the original value, and division by zero is undefined — any growth from zero would be an “infinite” percentage. The calculator explains this instead of showing a misleading result.
