Work Hours Calculator

Calculate hours worked from start and end time minus breaks — in hours and minutes, decimal hours and per week.

0–23 (24-hour clock).

Earlier than the start means the shift ends after midnight.

About this tool

Enter when you started and finished, the length of your unpaid break and how many days a week you work that shift. The calculator gives the time worked in hours and minutes, in decimal hours for time sheets and payroll, and the weekly total. Overnight shifts are handled automatically.

Frequently asked questions

Divide the minutes by 60. 30 minutes is 0.5 hours, 45 minutes is 0.75 and 20 minutes is 0.33 — so 7 h 45 min is 7.75 hours on a time sheet, and at $20 an hour that is $155.

If the end time is earlier than the start time, the shift runs past midnight and 24 hours are added to the end. 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours; with a 30-minute break you worked 7.5 hours.

Subtract breaks that are unpaid. US federal law does not require meal breaks, but if one is given, a bona fide meal period of 30 minutes or more is normally unpaid, while short rest breaks of 5–20 minutes count as work time.

In the US, the Fair Labor Standards Act requires overtime at 1.5 times the regular rate after 40 hours in a workweek. A 08:00–16:30 shift with a 30-minute break is 8 hours a day, or 40 hours over 5 days.
