Weighted Average Calculator

Calculate a weighted average (weighted mean) from up to 8 values and their weights — grades, scores or prices.

A grade, score or price.

Its weight, e.g. credits, percent or quantity.

About this tool

Enter up to eight values with their weights — grades and credits, test scores and percentages, or prices and quantities — to get the weighted average, the calculation step by step, the total weight and the unweighted mean for comparison. Leave unused rows empty.

Frequently asked questions

Multiply each value by its weight, add the products, and divide by the sum of the weights. For 5 × 10 + 4 × 15 + 3 × 5 = 125 and weights 10 + 15 + 5 = 30, the weighted average is 125 ÷ 30 = 4.17.

A normal (arithmetic) mean gives every value the same weight. In the example above the plain mean of 5, 4 and 3 is 4.00, but the weighted average is 4.17 because the 5 and 4 carry more weight.

Use each grade as the value and the course credits as the weight. Norwegian universities convert A–E to 5–1: the University of Bergen’s example gives 330 grade points over 90 credits, an average of 3.67.

No. Weights can be any non-negative numbers — percentages, credits, hours or quantities. Only their relative size matters; the calculator divides by their sum.
