Mean, Median and Mode Calculator

Find the mean (average), median, mode and range of up to 12 numbers, with the sorted list and the working shown.

About this tool

Enter up to 12 numbers — leave the rest empty. The calculator finds the mean (the sum divided by the count), the median (the middle value when the numbers are sorted, or the average of the two middle values), the mode (the value that occurs most often) and the range (largest minus smallest), and shows the sorted list and how each result was found.

Frequently asked questions

The mean is the sum divided by the number of values. The median is the middle value when the values are sorted. The mode is the value that occurs most often. For 2, 3, 3, 5 and 12 the mean is 25 ÷ 5 = 5, the median is 3 and the mode is 3.

Sort the values and take the average of the two in the middle. Statistics Norway’s example of 12 monthly salaries (in thousand kr) has 38 and 40 as the 6th and 7th values, so the median is (38 + 40) ÷ 2 = 39, while the mean is 516 ÷ 12 = 43.

When a few values are much larger or smaller than the rest. In the salary example above, one salary of 81 pulls the mean up to 43 while the median stays at 39. That is why income and house prices are often reported as medians.

Yes. If every value occurs only once there is no mode, and if two or more values share the highest count, they are all modes. For 1, 1, 2, 2 and 3, both 1 and 2 are modes.
