About this tool

Enter two fractions as whole-number numerators and denominators and choose an operation. The calculator finds a common denominator for adding and subtracting, multiplies or flips-and-multiplies for the other operations, reduces the answer to its simplest form and shows it as a mixed number and a decimal, with the working.

Frequently asked questions

Rewrite both over a common denominator, then add the numerators. For 1/2 + 1/3 the lowest common denominator is 6: 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.

Multiply the numerators together and the denominators together, then simplify: 2/3 × 9/4 = 18/12, which reduces to 3/2 or 1 1/2.

Flip the second fraction and multiply: 1/2 ÷ 1/4 = 1/2 × 4/1 = 4/2 = 2. You cannot divide by a fraction whose numerator is zero.

Divide the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor. For 18/12 the GCD is 6, giving 3/2. An improper fraction like 3/2 is the mixed number 1 1/2.
