Volume Calculator

Calculate the volume and surface area of a sphere, hemisphere, cone, truncated cone or pyramid — in cubic units and litres.

Half the diameter.

About this tool

Choose a shape — sphere, hemisphere, cone, truncated cone (a bucket or flower pot) or square pyramid — enter its measurements in mm, cm, m, inches or feet, and get the volume in cubic units and litres plus the total surface area. The working shows the formula with your numbers, such as V = 4/3 × π × r³ for a sphere.

Frequently asked questions

V = 4/3 × π × r³, where r is the radius (half the diameter). A ball with a radius of 10 cm holds 4/3 × 3.14159 × 1,000 = 4,188.79 cm³, or 4.19 litres. Its surface area is 4 × π × r² = 1,256.64 cm². A hemisphere holds exactly half: 2,094.40 cm³.

Both are one third of the matching prism: cone V = 1/3 × π × r² × h, square pyramid V = 1/3 × a² × h. A cone with r = 10 cm and h = 30 cm holds 3,141.59 cm³ — a third of the 9,424.78 cm³ cylinder around it. A pyramid with a 10 cm base and 12 cm height holds 400 cm³.

Treat it as a truncated cone (frustum): V = 1/3 × π × h × (R² + R × r + r²), with R the bottom radius, r the top radius and h the height. A pot with radii of 15 cm and 10 cm and a height of 20 cm holds 1/3 × π × 20 × 475 = 9,948.38 cm³, or about 9.95 litres.

1 litre = 1 dm³ = 1,000 cm³ = 1,000,000 mm³, and 1 m³ = 1,000 litres. In imperial units, 1 in³ = 16.387 ml and 1 ft³ = 28.317 litres. The calculator converts automatically, so a sphere with a 2-inch radius (33.51 in³) shows as 549.1 ml.
