Cubic Meter Calculator

Work out the volume in cubic metres (m³) of a box, room, trench or cylinder from its measurements — plus litres, cubic feet and cubic yards.

Number of identical boxes, containers or holes.

About this tool

Choose a box (rectangular) or cylinder shape, pick the unit you measured in — mm, cm, m, inches or feet — and enter the measurements. The calculator converts everything to metres and shows the volume in cubic metres, litres, cubic feet and cubic yards, with the formula used. Add a quantity to total several identical boxes, containers or holes. Useful for concrete, soil and gravel, moving boxes, storage, tanks and shipping.

Frequently asked questions

Convert all measurements to metres and multiply length × width × height. Example: a box 120 × 80 × 50 cm is 1.2 × 0.8 × 0.5 = 0.48 m³. If you multiply the centimetre values instead (480,000 cm³), divide by 1,000,000 to get m³.

Volume = π × radius² × height, where the radius is half the diameter. A round tank or post hole 60 cm across and 90 cm deep holds π × 0.3² × 0.9 ≈ 0.254 m³, or about 254 litres.

Exactly 1,000 litres. One litre is one cubic decimetre (10 × 10 × 10 cm), and a cubic metre holds 10 × 10 × 10 = 1,000 of them. So 0.48 m³ = 480 litres.

One foot is exactly 0.3048 m, so 1 ft³ = 0.0283168 m³ and 1 m³ ≈ 35.31 ft³. One yard is 0.9144 m, so 1 yd³ = 0.764555 m³ and 1 m³ ≈ 1.308 yd³. Bulk materials such as concrete and topsoil are sold by the m³ in most countries and by the cubic yard in the US.
