Frequently asked questions
It depends on the gallon. A US gallon is exactly 231 cubic inches = 3.785411784 L, while an imperial (UK) gallon is exactly 4.54609 L — about 20 % more. So 10 US gallons is 37.85 L and 10 UK gallons is 45.46 L.
Exactly 1,000 litres, because 1 litre is 1 cubic decimetre (10 × 10 × 10 cm). A pool of 8 × 4 × 1.5 m holds 48 m³ = 48,000 L. One cubic foot is 28.3168 L.
Both are one-eighth of their gallon, and the imperial gallon is larger. A US pint is 473.18 mL (16 US fl oz) and a UK pint is 568.26 mL (20 imperial fl oz), so a UK pint is about 20 % bigger.
An oil barrel is defined as 42 US gallons, which is 158.987 L — about 159 litres. Oil production is often quoted in barrels per day, so 1 million barrels a day is about 159,000 m³ a day.
