Gravel Calculator

Calculate how much gravel, crushed stone, sand or topsoil you need — by volume and weight.

Covers compaction and uneven ground. 5–10% is normal.

Weights use typical loose densities and are estimates. Suppliers may sell by volume or by weight — check which before ordering.

About this tool

Enter the length, width and depth of the area and choose a material to get the volume in m³ or yd³ and the weight in tonnes or tons. Useful for driveways, paths, patios bases and garden beds.

Frequently asked questions

Multiply length × width × depth to get the volume, then multiply by the material's density to get the weight. A 5 × 4 m area at 5 cm deep is 1 m³, which is about 1.6 tonnes of gravel.

Around 5 cm (2 in) for decorative gravel and paths, 7–10 cm (3–4 in) for driveways on top of a compacted sub-base, and 10–15 cm (4–6 in) for a sub-base layer itself.

Loose gravel and crushed stone weigh roughly 1.5–1.7 tonnes per m³ (about 1.3–1.4 short tons per cubic yard). Wet material is heavier, so suppliers' figures can differ.

Gravel compacts and spreads into the ground, and sub-bases are rarely perfectly level. 5–10% extra avoids running short halfway through the job.
