Tournament Time Calculator

Find out how many matches a round robin tournament has and how long it takes with your match length and number of pitches.

1 = everyone plays everyone. With more groups, teams only play the others in their group.

Changeover time before the next match starts.

Assumes every team plays once per round and the next match starts after the break. Add time for warm-up, a lunch break, play-offs and a final.

About this tool

Enter the number of teams, how many groups they play in, the match length, the break between matches and how many pitches or courts you have. The calculator counts the matches and rounds for a single or double round robin, plans the matches round by round so no team plays twice at once, and tells you how many time slots you need and how long the whole tournament takes. Use it to plan a football cup, a pickleball or padel round robin, a school tournament or a club night.

Frequently asked questions

With n teams, every team meets every other team once, which gives n × (n − 1) ÷ 2 matches. 4 teams play 6 matches, 6 teams 15, 8 teams 28 and 10 teams 45. A double round robin (home and away) doubles that: 8 teams play 56 matches.

With an even number of teams, n − 1 rounds, and every team plays in every round. With an odd number, n rounds, because one team has a bye in each round. 8 teams need 7 rounds of 4 matches; 7 teams also need 7 rounds, of 3 matches each.

Count the time slots and multiply by the match length plus the break. 8 teams in one group on 2 pitches play 4 matches per round, so each round takes 2 slots and 7 rounds take 14 slots. With 15-minute matches and 5-minute breaks that is 14 × 15 + 13 × 5 = 275 minutes, or 4 h 35 min.

A group of n teams can play at most n ÷ 2 matches at the same time (rounded down), so extra pitches beyond that sit idle. 8 teams can use up to 4 pitches: with 4 pitches the same tournament takes 7 slots, or 2 h 15 min. To go faster with fewer pitches, split the teams into groups or shorten the matches.
