Random Hobby Generator

Find a new hobby at random — creative, sport, outdoors, learning, crafts or social — and filter for hobbies that are cheap to start.

About this tool

Looking for something new to do in your free time? Draw random hobbies from 72 in six groups: creative, sport and exercise, outdoors and nature, mind and learning, crafts and making, and social and collecting. Choose “cheap to start” to see only hobbies that need little or no equipment, and get up to 12 suggestions without repeats.

Frequently asked questions

72 hobbies, 12 in each of six groups: creative (drawing, photography), sport and exercise (running, climbing), outdoors and nature (birdwatching, fishing), mind and learning (chess, a new language), crafts and making (knitting, woodworking) and social and collecting (a book club, amateur theatre).

Hobbies you can try with little or no equipment, or with things most people already have — such as drawing with a pencil, running, chess, knitting or volunteering. Hobbies that usually need gear, like photography, kayaking, cycling or woodworking, are left out with this filter. 50 of the 72 hobbies count as cheap to start.

Generate a few, pick the one that makes you curious and try it for a few weeks before buying expensive equipment. Many clubs, libraries and adult-education centres offer beginner courses where you can borrow gear and meet people who share the interest.

Not within one draw — each click gives up to 12 different hobbies. A new click starts a fresh draw. Choose a single group, or combine a group with “cheap to start”, to narrow the list.
