Frequently asked questions

A short starting point for a story — a situation, a character or a problem — such as “A dragon egg hatches in a farmer’s barn.” You decide who the characters are, what happens next and how it ends. Prompts help you start writing instead of waiting for the perfect idea.

Twelve constraints that change how you write the story: as a diary, from an animal’s point of view, starting with the ending, in at most 100 words, entirely as dialogue, with a surprising ending, in the first person, within one hour of story time, as a letter, with three given words, with a main character who cannot speak, or as a poem.

60 prompts — 12 in each of five genres — and 12 twists, so 720 combinations with twists on. Choose a genre to narrow the list or “All genres” to mix everything. Each click draws up to 20 prompts without repeats.

Generate one prompt for the whole class and set a timer for 10–20 minutes, then compare how different the stories became. For younger pupils, the everyday and fantasy genres are easiest to start with. All prompts are original and free to use.
