Frequently asked questions

Divide the profit by the selling price and multiply by 100. An item costing 150 and selling for 200 makes 50 profit, a margin of 50 ÷ 200 = 25%.

Margin is profit as a share of the selling price; markup is profit as a share of cost. The same 50 profit on a 150 cost is a 25% margin but a 33.3% markup, so markup is always the larger number.

Divide the cost by (1 − margin). For a 20% margin on a cost of 80, the price is 80 ÷ 0.8 = 100 — which is a 25% markup.

Margin = markup ÷ (1 + markup). A 50% markup gives 0.5 ÷ 1.5 = 33.3% margin; a 100% markup (doubling the cost) gives a 50% margin.
