Fuel Economy Converter

Convert fuel consumption between L/100 km, litres per mil, km/L and US or UK miles per gallon.

US and UK miles per gallon differ because a US gallon (3.785 L) is smaller than an imperial gallon (4.546 L). Official test figures (WLTP, EPA) are usually better than real-world driving.

About this tool

Enter a fuel consumption figure and pick its unit. You instantly get the same figure in litres per 100 km, litres per Scandinavian mil (10 km), kilometres per litre, and miles per gallon in both US and imperial (UK) gallons.

Frequently asked questions

Divide 235.21 by the US mpg figure, or 282.48 by the UK (imperial) mpg figure. So 30 mpg (US) is 235.21 ÷ 30 = 7.84 L/100 km, and 40 mpg (UK) is 7.06 L/100 km. The same formula works in reverse.

A US gallon is 3.785 litres and an imperial gallon is 4.546 litres, so the same car shows about 20 % more mpg in UK figures. 40 mpg (UK) equals 33.3 mpg (US), and both equal 7.06 L/100 km.

In Norway and Sweden distances are often given in mil, where 1 mil = 10 km. Fuel use in litres per mil is therefore L/100 km divided by 10: a car using 6.5 L/100 km uses 0.65 litres per mil.

Fuel used is inversely proportional to mpg. Over 100 miles, going from 10 to 20 mpg saves 5 gallons, while going from 20 to 50 mpg saves only 3 gallons. Litres per 100 km shows fuel use directly, so savings are easier to compare.
