Fuel Cost Calculator

Work out what a car trip will cost in fuel — and split it between passengers.

Real consumption depends on speed, traffic, load, weather and terrain. Tolls, ferries and parking are not included.

About this tool

Enter the distance, your car's fuel consumption and the fuel price to see how much fuel a trip uses and what it costs, one-way or return, and the cost per person when you share the ride. Works with L/100 km or miles per gallon.

Frequently asked questions

Metric: distance (km) × consumption (L/100 km) ÷ 100 × price per litre. US: distance (miles) ÷ MPG × price per gallon. A 300 km trip at 6.5 L/100 km uses 19.5 litres.

Your trip computer often shows it. To measure it yourself, fill the tank, reset the trip meter, drive normally, then refill: litres used ÷ km driven × 100 gives L/100 km.

Divide 235.2 by US MPG to get L/100 km (or 282.5 by UK MPG). For example, 30 US MPG ≈ 7.8 L/100 km.

High motorway speeds, heavy loads, roof boxes, cold weather, hills and stop-start traffic all increase consumption. Add 10–20% if you expect any of these.
