Average Speed Calculator

Find the true average speed of a trip driven at different speeds — up to three legs, with or without stops.

In km or miles, as chosen above.

In km/h or mph.

Optional third leg — leave both fields empty to skip it.

Total time stopped, in minutes. Enter 0 for moving time only.

About this tool

Enter the distance and speed of each part of a trip, plus any time spent on breaks. The calculator adds up the time for every leg and divides the total distance by the total time, so you get the real average speed — which is lower than the simple average of the speeds, because you spend longer at the slower speed. It also shows the total travel time and the average speed without stops. Works in km/h or mph.

Frequently asked questions

Divide the total distance by the total time. Driving 60 km at 60 km/h takes 1 hour and 60 km at 90 km/h takes 40 minutes, so the trip is 120 km in 1 h 40 min: 120 ÷ 1.667 = 72 km/h.

Because you spend more time at the lower speed. Going somewhere at 60 km/h and coming back the same distance at 20 km/h gives an average of 30 km/h, not 40 km/h. For two equal distances the average speed is the harmonic mean: 2 × 60 × 20 ÷ (60 + 20) = 30.

For the average speed of the whole trip, yes — time is time. The 120 km trip above takes 1 h 40 min of driving; with a 20-minute break it takes 2 hours, so the average drops from 72 to 60 km/h. The calculator shows both numbers.

Only partly. If you drive the first mile at 30 mph, it takes 2 minutes. To average 60 mph over two miles you would need to finish both miles in 2 minutes — which you have already used up. No speed on the second mile is fast enough.
