Tips for a good username
- Make it easy to read and say — people should be able to find you after hearing it once.
- Keep it short. Shorter names fit more platforms and are easier to type.
- Don’t include personal details such as your full name, birth year, address or school. They make you easier to identify and can help attackers guess passwords.
- Try to use the same name everywhere, so friends and followers can find you on every platform.
- Avoid numbers that look random unless the name you want is taken — then a short, meaningful number is better than a long string.
- Never reuse your username as (part of) your password.
Username rules on popular platforms
| Platform | Length | Allowed characters |
|---|---|---|
| X (Twitter) | 4–15 characters | Letters, numbers and underscores |
| Up to 30 characters | Letters, numbers, periods and underscores | |
| TikTok | 2–24 characters | Letters, numbers, periods and underscores |
| Twitch | 4–25 characters | Letters, numbers and underscores |
As of October 2026. Platforms change their rules from time to time. Hyphens aren’t allowed on these four — use the underscore or dot separator, or none.
What to do if a username is taken
- Switch the separator: maple_comet, maple.comet and maplecomet are different names.
- Swap the order of the words, or replace one word with a synonym.
- Add a short word in front, such as "the", "its" or "real".
- Add a number that means something to you — but not your birth year.
- Generate a new batch and try again. Availability can only be checked on the platform itself.
