Power Converter — hp to kW
Convert horsepower to kW and back — mechanical hp, metric PS, watts, BTU/h and kcal/h in one place.
About this tool
Enter a power, choose the unit you have and the unit you want. You get the exact conversion and the same power in every unit at once. Uses the exact definitions: 1 mechanical hp = 745.69987 W, 1 metric horsepower (PS) = 735.49875 W, 1 BTU/h = 0.29307 W and 1 kcal/h = 1.163 W.
Frequently asked questions
Multiply by 0.7457, because one mechanical horsepower is 745.69987 W. So 100 hp = 74.57 kW and 300 hp = 223.71 kW. To go back, multiply kW by 1.341: 150 kW = 201.2 hp.
Mechanical (imperial) horsepower is 550 foot-pounds per second, 745.7 W. Metric horsepower (PS in German, hk in Scandinavia, CV in French) is 75 kg lifted 1 m in 1 s, exactly 735.49875 W — about 1.4% less. A 100 PS engine is 73.55 kW or 98.6 hp.
The kilowatt is the SI unit of power, and EU type-approval documents state engine power in kW. Brochures often add PS or hp next to it: 110 kW = 149.6 PS = 147.5 hp.
One BTU per hour is 0.29307 W, so divide BTU/h by 3,412.14 to get kW. A 12,000 BTU/h air conditioner (one “ton” of cooling) is 3.52 kW, and 9,000 BTU/h is 2.64 kW.
