Data Storage Converter — MB to GB

Convert MB to GB, GB to TB, bits to bytes and decimal units to binary GiB and MiB — every unit at once.

About this tool

Enter an amount of data, choose the unit you have and the unit you want. You get the exact conversion plus the same amount in every decimal unit (1 kB = 1,000 bytes) and every binary unit (1 KiB = 1,024 bytes), so you can see why a 1 TB drive shows up as 931 GB and how many megabytes a 100 Mbit/s connection moves per second.

Frequently asked questions

In decimal SI units, which drive makers and network speeds use, 1 GB = 1,000 MB and 1 MB = 1,000 kB. In binary units, 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB. Windows shows sizes in the binary units but labels them KB, MB and GB, which is why the two systems are easy to mix up.

The drive holds 1,000,000,000,000 bytes (1 TB). Windows divides by 1,073,741,824 bytes per “GB”, which is really a gibibyte, so it shows 931.3. Nothing is missing — it is the same number of bytes counted in a different unit.

A byte is 8 bits. Internet speeds are given in megabits per second (Mbit/s), file sizes in megabytes. A 100 Mbit/s connection moves at most 12.5 MB per second, so a 5 GB download takes at least 400 seconds — about 6 minutes 40 seconds.

Binary prefixes approved by the IEC in 1998: 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes, 1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes and 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes. A GiB is about 7.4% larger than a GB, and the gap grows with each step: a TiB is about 10% larger than a TB.
